Home in zicht

PLAYSTATION®3

PS3 firmware 2.40 said to be bringing in-game XMB, trophies

It's not confirmed by Sony just yet, but Videogaming247 says it has it on "good authority" that the upcoming version 2.40 firmware update for the PS3 will at long last bring with it in-game XMB, as well as the slightly less-anticipated trophy support. If those sources are to be believed, the update will be dropping sometime in June, with some speculation further pointing to a release in advance of Metal Gear Solid 4's June 12th launch. There's apparently still some testing to be done to ensure that the in-game XMB will work with all titles, however, and it seems like features like trophies and user-music via XMB will only be supported in games created with the new developers tools that have apparently already been released in advance of the firmware update.

Mozilla Shooting for Download World Record With Firefox 3

Almost D-Day
clipped from gizmodo.com

Sure, Firefox 3 is the bee's knees (and has been since Beta 3), but will it go down in history books? It will if it sets a world record! Mozilla's taking the quick and easy path to everlasting glory (until someone beats it anyway) by planning to set the world record for most software downloads in 24 hours on Firefox 3's official launch day. The exact day isn't posted, but it'll be sometime next month. I hope they've got some Stark Industries-powered servers running this show. Check out the super-cute Firefox 3 download badge:

Hands-on With Delicious Library 2.0 - It Tracks Gadgets and Tools!

Zou bijna een mac gaan kopen.
clipped from gizmodo.com

I've been a big fan of Delicious Library for a while, using it to conveniently keep track of what movies, games and books we own and where they are in the house in a visually appealing and searchable way. It revolutionized my DVD storage system, allowing me to shove them into multiple 50/100 disc spindles and then easily being able to see which one they're in just by using my computer. Now with version 2.0 out, Delicious Monster has added three things Gizmodo readers will love, the ability to track gadgets, the ability to track tools, and the ability to track toys. It's still fantastic.

E Ball's inflatable golf simulator saves you greens fees

So cool!
clipped from www.engadget.com

Never mind paying absurd quantities of cash to have some swing analyzer tell you how you'll never be like Tiger -- just pick yourself up one of these concoctions. E Ball's inflatable golf simulator not only consumes your entire backyard, it takes you back to those glory days of frolicking at the fair with your BFF, and it even allows you to practice your game in less-than-flawless weather. The device enables amateurs to work on their driving and putting, all without having to fetch balls afterwards or deal with the embarrassment of completely hacking it up in front of your more seasoned pals. It looks as if you'll have to ring up E Ball in order to get pricing details, but we don't envision this one coming in cheap.

Exclusive: Dell Mini Inspiron, Their First Mini Laptop

Mooi, zulks een kleine laptop!
clipped from gizmodo.com

I bumped into Michael Dell at All Things D after his interview, and he was nice enough to show me this laptop that he was carrying that he said no one's seen before. It's a small form factor notebook, just like the Asus Eee and the HP 2133. He wouldn't tell me what OS it's running, or the pricing, but that it's a low-cost notebook meant for developing countries, and I hope here. Maybe it's Atom-powered. Who knows? But I do see three USB ports, a card reader, VGA out, Ethernet, and that red candy shell. I couldn't tell how big the screen was before it was tucked away into a black sleeve and ushered from the building, but it's small. Update: Dell just released a pair of shots that add to the sense of scale, but no official name yet.

Hybrid Technologies Supercar Crushes Prius And Corvette

clipped from gizmodo.com

There's a car that's not slated for release until 2009 or 2010. It makes some wild claims. And no one in the media has driven it yet (since it's still in production). But with those caveats in mind, continue on to drop your jaw at Hybrid Technologies' upcoming still-nameless supercar.

Hybrid Technologies is working on a car coming in two flavors—all electric and hybrid. With the electric, they promise a 150 to 180-mile range per charge. With the lithium-ion hybrid, they promise a 220mpg minimum.

Those specs would be impressive in a golf cart.

But the most compelling part of it all is the alleged performance. Popular Mechanics asked Hybrid Technologies if their car could compete with the Corvette ZR-1 and its crazy V8 that induces mid-600s-scale horsepower. The company responded that they were "way out of the ballpark—it's gonna be wild." [Popular Mechanics]

UPDATE: GPS-Tracked Biggest Drawing in the World is Complete Fake

clipped from gizmodo.com

You know that so-called "biggest drawing in the World" made by pin-point DHL mailings of a GPS tracker? Well, all you doubting commenters were right: it's a complete and utter fake. While artist Erik Nordenankar was allowed into a DHL warehouse, that's about it as far as any real mail is concerned. A note on his website says "This is fictional work. DHL did not transport the GPS at any time." So, no GPS tracker, no DHL pin-point global mailing. Just one big steaming pile of fakeness. [Gadget Lab]

SATA HDD dock becomes mutant card reader, scares pets

We're big fans of SATA HDD docks that let you quickly access whole drives like noisy, overgrown memory sticks. An earlier unit offered just USB connectivity to your Mac or PC, later adding eSATA before rounding out its options with FireWire. Now we have a new model that still accepts bare 2.5- and 3.5-inch disks on top, but ditches the FireWire connectivity on the back in exchange for a card reader and two-port USB hub on the front -- perfect for plugging in storage of the smaller and quieter variety.

Sellgino shows off GS-200 GPS Photo Tour geotagger

Geotagging devices are cropping up at a pretty steady pace these days, and it looks like you can now add one more company to the bandwagon, with Sellgino now showing off its GS-200 GPS Photo Tour device. Like other similar options out there, this one relies on your photo's EXIF data to match 'em up with the locations logged by the GPS receiver (a SiRF Star III, in this case), with some software provided to merge all that data together and plot out your travels on Google Maps. Somewhat more uniquely, this one will also double as a USB handset for VoIP calls (hence the design), and it can apparently be used as an external USB drive, though it's not clear how much storage space it packs. No word on a price or release date either, unfortunately.

Windows Mobile 6.1 update for HTC TyTN II now extra official

clipped from www.engadget.com

A leaky update faucet let in-the-know users get in on this one a little early, but HTC's now ready to trumpet its official Windows Mobile 6.1 update for its TyTN II to the world. Besides 6.1, the new release packs in the "display performance update" promised some time ago to help put a cap on the cursing and fist-shaking being displayed by owners of various HTC devices lately -- but as we understand it, this isn't a true driver, so don't expect miracles. AT&T Tilt folks who want to play it straight will have to wait some undefined additional period of time for their carrier to get its act together and release the update, but their European comrades can head on over to HTC's site now and kick off the download.

How Google Really Places Map Markers

LOL!
clipped from gizmodo.com

Don't let them deceive you with their fancy topographic buzzwords, and smartypants search algorithms. They just use these, and have people who move them really really fast as you click. Seriously. An Underwater Generator Inspired by Sharks, Minus the Seal Killing

Na de windmolens nu ook de haaienstaarten. Gaan ze hier ook Holland mee volzetten???
clipped from gizmodo.com

It never hurts to take cues from nature when designing technology, and that's just what BioPower Systems did when engineering its bioSTREAM underwater generator. It's inspired by shark tails, using the shape in a fixed device that moves with the motion of the ocean. It reverses the use of the tail, with the water moving it rather than it moving in the water, but by anchoring it to a fixed poing it allows it to align itself in any direction depending on how the flow is moving. No word on just how cost-effective generating energy this way would be, however. [BioPower Systems via PSFK]
